Artist Statement
With many formative years being focused on conceptual installations and short films,
Alexandra honed in on her interest in color and spatial relations. With the loose ends
of her roots in painting mingling with a degree in media, the pressing question of a
visual signature has always lingered.
“I treat each painting as a study to define this visual language. In each study, you can
see the structure and regiment built to draw the viewer into its inherently meditative
process. Each brushstroke, each color, each form is intentional and debated
throughout the creative process. The strict rule sets are paradoxically what create
peaceful harmony on the canvas.
The subjects of these studies explore this visual thumbprint while reflecting on life around me.”
From painting a 5-foot long crab in the “Sea Creature” series to the resilient plant
“Georgia” in the “Little Forest” series, each piece is a story, often specific to its owner or
the artist. Each painting is approached as a stepping stone to the next. This visual
progression may never culminate, but rather persist on its need to be created and explored.
